How to keep a student property clean

Having unclean tenants living in your property can cause numerous problems as well as undue hassle and stress. In our experience, common issues in student properties include unwashed dishes, dirty carpets, moldy bathrooms, indisposed of rubbish and unwiped, sticky appliances and surfaces. This mess may not only attract unwanted creatures; it will very likely devalue your property too.

So what can you do to keep a student house clean? Drawing on our years of experience cleaning commercial and student properties in the Leeds area, Webton Cleaning Services recommend the following actions:

1. Make it clear what cleaning you expect
In the rental contract make it crystal clear exactly what the students’ responsibilities are. It may also be helpful to provide them with a checklist so that they can tick tasks off. Some landlords even provide suggestions for which cleaning products to use so there is no excuse for tenants not looking after the property sufficiently.

2. Provide a demonstration
For some students this is the first time they will have lived away from home. They may never have had to clean a property before or know exactly what to do. Whilst it will take some patience, showing tenants what needs doing and where could save frustration and damage in the long term.

3. Call the professionals
If students are unable to look after the house or flat themselves, it may be time to use a professional service to ensure it stays clean. Some landlords have a clause in their contract which states this hire will be charged to the students if it is needed to maintain the cleanliness of the property. This may also prompt them to clean more regularly too!
